Patriots conquer PRISAA regionals, set sights on nationals

After a commendable showing from DLSU-D athletes during the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) regionals held last February 23 to 25, Patriots are gearing up for the PRISAA nationals set to take place on April 4 to 11.

Remaining undefeated for three years, the Lady Patriots dominated women’s basketball with a commanding 95-64 blowout over the Lady Brahmans from the University of Batangas (UB) in their championship game, securing a spot in the national league. Jonalyn Bongalos was awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP), while Manicel Solomon and Eula Atienza earned spots in the Mythical Five.

Continuing their display of excellence, the Patriot Tankers ended their regional bid with an outstanding haul of 31 gold, 22 silver, and 6 bronze medals in swimming.

Meanwhile, chess players Gwyneth Melody Perez and Jerome Angelo Aragones secured the championship in the singles division, while the women’s and men’s teams both earned silver in the overall events.

In track and field, Joanna Melisa Bansag was hailed the MVP in the women’s division.

On the flip side, not all battles ended in victory as the Patriots’ men’s basketball team fell short of the nationals line-up after enduring back-to-back losses against the San Pablo College (SPC) Ravens, 85-87, in a thrilling matchup. Despite the defeat, John Lloyd Rasonable and Rogelio Calagos earned Mythical Five honors for their outstanding performances.

In a hard-fought volleyball showdown, DLSU-D Cagebelles took an early lead before falling short to Batangas’ team—a formidable squad composed of players from UB and De La Salle Lipa (DLSL)—in four sets. But, members of green-and-white Francheska Abighale Ragual, Leira Aure, and Shaira Joi Pamero still bagged spots in the Mythical Five.

The Cavite men’s volleyball reps also clashed against Batangas,  suffering a three-set loss. Despite this setback, players Paul Bryan Malaiba and Popoy Alabin also received Mythical Five distinctions.

While the Patriots men’s basketball alongside women’s and men’s volleyball secured first runner-up finishes at the PRISAA regionals, they fell short of advancing to the national leg.
