Set for departure

Boredom often strikes when we stay in one place for too long, triggering our feet to stroll and lead us to striking spots. In youth, we’re lucky to be at the perfect time to explore our own destiny and follow our wanderlust from one place to another. So as we start to become travelers and pack our bags for an adventure, we shouldn’t forget the little known perks of why we opt for unforgettable trips in the first place.

Traveling comes in different forms—family vacations, business-trips, friendly getaways, or even soul-searching. Being part of festivities and gazing over landscapes in different parts of the world make us admirers of natural and cultural beauty—not to mention feed goals on Snapchat stories and Instagram memories.

We’re at that age when travel is a rite of passage, and we ought to take advantage of it before we hit our twenties. According to the lifestyle blog When in Manila, people who belong to this age group are adventure-seekers who are free from any commitments and complications—like budgets or body pains. As we enter the iconic “twenties” club, it seems that responsibility creeps closer to us as our batchmates are putting their career into reality and essentially learning ‘how-to-adult.’ But whether we want to hear it or not, the reality is this: leaving our busy schedule behind, out-of-town trips maximize our youth to drive our potential to a broader scheme of competence, boosting our self-esteem, and providing a sense of accomplishment by developing independence in applying our wisdom.

There are no specific criteria on how and where we want to spend our leisure time before going back to the reality of responsibility. Yet according to Professor Silfa Napicol, Chair of the Psychology Department of CLAC, our deep emotional goals guide us to have our specific travel plans. “[Our] openness to experiences reflects [our] general goal to try new things and to [be] engaged in new experiences,” Napicol added. For every journey we take, we’re able to release our self-confidence as we face unexpected and unplanned situations as spontaneity also enables our mind to function critically in handling different circumstances.

As we relish in exciting tours, disconnecting yourself from the online world just for a while will definitely make our trips more memorable—and last longer—than an Instagram feed or temporary Snapchat story. In fact, liberation from our routine maximizes personal time as it gives us some fresh air away from our daily existence to simply contemplate and release some tension by simply enjoying the moment in the form of meditation—perfect practice we can apply once we get back to our usual errands.

As we voyage from idea to reality, we aren’t just searching for a place—but perhaps for ourselves. Replacing the ordinary for the extraordinary, travel might just be essential to encourage us to step out of our comfort zone and see the world with a brighter perspective.
