5th DMUN opens to all students from DLSU-D, other universities
The 5th Dasmariñas Model United Nations (DMUN) opened its conference to delegates from DLSU-D students and other universities for the three-day event from May 10 to 12 held in different venues such as the Centennial Hall, Kitchen Demo Room, Bulwagang Jose Basa, and Alumni Auditorium, as per DMUN Secretary General Hannah Joy Alcomendas.
Some of the universities that participated in the 5th DMUN are De La Salle University -Manila, Mindanao State University, University of Sto. Tomas, and Ateneo De Manila University.
DMUN is an annual United Nations (UN) simulation conference wherein the delegates directly imitate proceedings from the UN. Each delegate acted as the ambassador of their assigned country while discussing global issues with their given committee.
The three committees were the UN General Assembly, UN Human Rights Council, and UN Security Council.
Alcomendas said that the topic given to UN General Assembly was Global Efforts to Combat Climate Change, while UN Human Rights Council discussed the Humanitarian Crisis in South Sudan, and the UN Security Council tackled International Action to Combat Terrorism.
After discussing the issues given to each committee, delegates created their own draft resolution containing their suggested solution to the issue given to them.
Through voting, the draft resolution that won will serve as the outmost legal binding document of the 5th DMUN. “‘Yong final document, siyempre reference rin for future use and ‘yong iba, pinapasa sa UN or suggestion din ‘yon (as a solution). Puwede rin (sic) siya (final draft resolution) gawing paper,” Alcomendas furthered.
Similar to the real UN, the DMUN committees UN General Assembly, UN Human Rights Council, and UN Security Council were comprised of 63, 40, and 15 countries, respectively.
Increasing interdependence between countries, Alcomendas explained that the importance of Model United Nations (MUN) is to teach diplomacy skills to delegates such as the importance of human rights.
“For example, ‘yong terrorism. Bakit siya kailangan i-address? Do’n pinapakita sa MUN na hindi lang tayo isolated Filipinos, we’re not just citizens of our country, we’re also citizens of the world,” Alcomendas added.
For its 5th year, DMUN brought together the program councils Developmental Studies and Political Science as they joined forces to organize the event spearheaded by their adviser, Professor Edwin Lineses of the Social Sciences Department.
