CJD, DLSU-D students, admin pledge commitment at DRRM seminar

As one of the events constituting the month-long program “Communication Impact 2017”, the Marketing Communications Office (MCO) conducted a Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) Seminar where members of the CJD pledged for safety in the campus on November 22, at the Tanghalang Julian Felipe.

The DRRM Seminar highlighted the importance of preparations for disasters, such as earthquakes and typhoons, where protocols and guides for the DLSU-D community were also discussed by the keynote speakers.

Holding an important role in keeping the community safe, the DRRM takes an “active role in initializing efforts that will motivate and build a resilient emergency and accident free academic community.”

Sarile further discussed the specific duties and responsibilities of DRRM committee heads, which includes conducting regular fire and earthquake drills, and enhancing skills through regular disaster or emergency training.

Meanwhile, the De La Salle Philippines (DLSP) National Coordinator Terteen Gail Omaña gave importance of alertness and readiness during times of calamities.

Kung mataas ang vulnerability [at] kung mababa ang capability [to act during catastrophes], that’s when disasters happen,” Omaña pointed out.

Included in her talk, Omaña also discussed Disaster Resiliency and National and Local Framework of DRRM in De La Salle Philippines, where she clarified that any announcement from DLSU campuses are not applicable to DLSU-D as the official announcement must be released by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administrative Services.

Evacuation protocols

In case a disaster occurs, the following evacuation procedures are advised and the designated evacuation areas are to be remembered in times of calamity.

The evacuation procedures that are to be observed include:

  • During evacuation in a building, everyone must leave immediately in a systematic and safe manner.
  • All building evacuations will take place once notified by the Building In-Charge.
  • Once building evacuation alarm is activated, everyone must leave to the nearest exit and remind others to follow.

As discussed in the DRMM Seminar, the designated evacuation areas for the DLSU-D community are at the Lake Park and University Track Oval. For those who are residing in the University Food Square, Dormitories, POLCA Hall, and Alumni Building, their designated evacuation area is at the Lake Park.

Meanwhile, those who are at the Felipe Calderon Hall, Ladislao Diwa Hall, College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, College of Business Administration and Accountancy, Gregoria Montoya Hall, Ugnayang La Salle, Environmental Resource Management Center, Bahay Pag-Asa, Retreat and Conference Center, Kabalikat, Warehouse, Kasipagan Hall, GDO, High School Complex, and Event Center may proceed to the University Track Oval.

The DRRM is further reinforced by the Republic Act No. 10121, or the Philippine Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Act of 2010, which aims to “strengthen the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management System, providing for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management framework and institutionalizing the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management plan, appropriating funds therefor and for other purposes.”
