Against three omens: USG, student leaders, and political parties

We are at a crossroads. The winter of discontent is evident. Everything is now at its peak, whether from resistance to cynicism. As a liberal student, it is unsurprising for me to hear that the USG has approved its own Constitution through an engineered plebiscite which doesn’t even represent the best wishes of the students.

I have long been observing the squabbles of the student leaders and so-called servants of the people. I don’t consider them genuine, as many of them are hungry vultures. The ones who remain firm are those marginalized and subjected to lower echelons. It is the ravens who feast at the top.

Why do we still cling to the speeches of these incompetents when all of them sound similar? It’s easier to speak the language of progress while abandoning it once you took office.

Why are we still complaining if the student government can never hear our voices? Their very existence is an attempt by the administration to give and pretend an illusion of choice, and to uphold that illusion of choice. This has been the game, for it has been rigged against the student’s favor.

And to the so-called student leaders, they are nothing but tyrants in waiting. The very same people whose tired rhetoric is used for personal gain. All in the name of their camaraderie and comradeship: a perverted communism. Worst of all, these student leaders have parties which are not even controlled fully by them; the alumni council lurks behind the scenes, trying to hide their mark. To deny this is tantamount to ramblings of a muffled individual—this is an open secret that perhaps every student is aware of.

Why do we still cling to the speeches of these incompetents when all of them sound similar? It’s easier to speak the language of progress while abandoning it once you took office. The student body is a microcosm of our politics. Our culture is also included in this microcosm.

A business prospect from all of this gives the air of inefficient leadership. Keeping the economy running is contrary to these defects. Inefficient leadership is coupled with academic elitism. And we will still expect that they will have a change of heart when they benefit from this mess we are in?

The power lies in all of us: the apathetic students. Our apathy is exploited year after year by these little politicians. Change will not come from this system and from this instrument of corruption. The only way we must do is to resist and be active.

Resist the three omens. Make them tremble from all of their offices. Resist, resist, resist. There is nothing to lose from this. We hold the mantle of their downfall. Let our spirit be revived and our rage against this hydra unconcealed.
