Scholarship budget to decrease next AY
The foreseen decrease in enrollment next academic year (AY) 2016-2017, due to the K to 12 program implementation, will cause a decrease in the allotted budget for the University’s internally funded scholarship program, according to Student Scholarship Office (SSO) Coordinator Eric Vargas.
“Basically, walang pagkukunan [ng budget for scholarship] kasi non-stock and non-profit school tayo. We only get funds from the paying students, so kapag lumiit ‘yung number ng mga paying student, maaaring lumiit ‘yung budget for scholarship,” Vargas said.
He added that the scholarship committee are yet to decide which scholarship programs would be prioritized next AY given the expected budget cut.
The P25-million-worth University scholarship fund supports 300 financial aid grantees for this first semester.
Vargas said the budget for scholarship in the succeeding AYs could return to normal after the transition of the K to 12 program. “Maaaring bumalik ‘yung [budget for scholarship] as long as ganoon pa rin kadami ‘yung number of students na papasok dito sa school, kasi maaaring magtrabaho na ‘yung mga nakatapos ng K-12.”
In response to this issue, he said that they plan to increase the number of scholarship grants through fundraising activities and partnerships with external benefactors, such as the local city government of Dasmariñas and Imus.
As of press time, the administration has not confirmed the amount of the scholarship budget decrease that could occur next AY.
Scholarship mandate
Due to the anticipated budget decrease, Vargas said the University is less likely to achieve its 20 percent target number of scholars, a mandate of the De La Salle Philippines for all Lasallian schools.

Vargas said, “Mahirap maabot ‘yung target na 20 percent kasi malaki ‘yung population natin at medyo mataas ‘yung tuition.”
According to Vargas, the 20 percent target number of scholars must come from the Full Scholar Equivalent which refers to students who have 100 percent discount on tuition fee.
He furthered that the annual tuition hikes could affect the increase and decrease in the number of scholars every AY, however, the University would still grant the scholarship as long as the student is qualified. • With a report from Katherine Anne Aboy
