A surprising ally has emerged to bring harmony and tranquility to university campuses: cats. In the busy world of academia, where students are constantly balancing schoolwork, exams, and extracurricular activities, one might find it surprising that these furry friends, with their independent nature and irresistible charm, have played a big role in the university experience, benefiting students in various ways and establishing a sense of community that goes beyond traditional lines.
The presence of cats on campus creates a unique ambience that promotes relaxation, and harmonious setting. Students in the universities are known to be always stressed and challenged with their personal and academic responsibilities. However, even studies demonstrate that the simple act of interacting with a cat can alleviate tension and anxiety.
Additionally, the presence of cats on campus motivates students to prioritize self-care and take breaks. It’s normal for students to become overwhelmed by their workload and deadlines, losing sight of their personal wellbeing in the process. But when cats are around, they serve as subtle reminders to take a break and enjoy living for a moment. Students can temporarily disengage from their obligations while petting a purring cat or simply watching its gentle, playful motions, enabling their minds to relax and recharge.
The presence of cats on campus also serves as a unifying force, bringing students from diverse backgrounds together. Cats have an innate ability to transcend social barriers, fostering connections among students who might not otherwise interact. Whether it’s through bonding over a shared admiration for a campus cat’s mischievous antics or engaging in casual conversations while petting them, these feline companions serve as a catalyst for building new friendships and strengthening existing ones.
Here in DLSU-D, the presence of cats is very significant as their influence can be felt throughout the various corners of our campus. Whether from the student lounges, the food square, and even from offices and classrooms, these feline friends have found their way into our hearts. Their constant companionship brings a sense of comfort to students, a witness to our stressful moments, and intense academic demands. The love for these campus cats is evident in the way students go out of their way to care for them by providing food, giving them enough attention, and even organizing crowdfunding campaigns and programs to ensure their safety and well-being.
The cats have long become cherished members of the Lasallian community, fostering a sense of connection and shared responsibility among students, faculties, and staff. Their presence serves as a gentle reminder of compassion and the power of small gestures in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment on campus.
Besides their positive impact on mental health and social dynamics, our University cats can also teach us valuable life lessons. Cats are known for their independence, resilience, and adaptability. Knowing when to assert their independence and when to seek companionship is also one of their prominent behaviors. Observing these qualities firsthand can inspire students to embrace similar attributes in their own lives. We can learn from our feline friends about the importance of self-care, setting boundaries, and embracing change, which are valuable skill sets that extend far beyond the confines of the campus.
The presence of cats in universities proves to be a powerful unifying force as they come with huge benefits, ranging from our personal well-being to building connections among students and promoting a harmonious environment. And most importantly, they were able to create a loving, and caring Lasallian community. As we navigate the challenges of our university life, these furry friends remind us to take a moment and enjoy the university life with them.
