CALABARZON nabs numerous medals in individual, dual, and relay games in PRISAA Nationals

Bringing pride to Region IV-A through individual, dual, and relay events during the 63rd Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) – Nationals, the CALABARZON athletes garnered an overflowing haul during the tourney from May 19 to 25 held in Davao City.

Badminton

Bringing their all-out efforts inside the badminton court, the CALABARZON shuttlers fought tooth and nail to nab their deserving awards during the Nationals tourney.

For the Men’s Singles event, Patriot Tristan Oliveros rightfully captured the gold as he placed first among the opponent regions. Seizing another medal, Patriot Tristan Oliveros, together with Patriot Jenina Marie Oliveros, ranked second in the Mixed Doubles event.

Moreover, Cavitena Jenina Marie Oliveros smashed her way to a bronze, along with fellow DLSU-D shuttler Joie Orata, in the Women’s Doubles event.

 

Swimming

The Region IV-A Swimming team garnered a total of six bronze medals in the individual and relay races of PRISAA – Nationals.  Undeterred to go against the current despite competing for the first time on a national meet, all of the Patriot rookie tankers in the team arose victorious in long course events landed a place in the tournament.

Patriot Christian Kent Dominguez snatched two bronze medals as he placed third in both Men’s 50-meter and 100-meter Long Course Freestyle events with a record of 26.69 seconds and 59.28 seconds, respectively.

Competing in the Men’s 200-Meter Long Course Breaststroke event, Patriot Christopher Catelo clocked a 2:52.63 record that placed him in third.

For the relay events, Patriots Dominguez, Francis Miguel Carreon, Alton Gene Sañez, and CALABARZON tanker Alton John De Luna ranked third in the Men’s 200-Meter Long Course Medley Relay with a 2:09.74 record.

Placing third in the Women’s 200-Meter and 400-Meter Long Course Freestyle Relays, Patriot Carla Mae David and Cavitenas Ysabella Aranas, Patricia Aquino, and Lara Fuentes added two more bronze medals as they marked 2:17.28 and 5:06.57 seconds, respectively.

 

Chess

The Region IV-A woodpushers grabbed two bronze medals during the PRISAA – Nationals as they placed third in the overall rankings of both the Men and Women’s Division.

Patriot chesser Paula Manalo was part of the third-placing Region IV-A team, along with Jersy Aurecristy Ariola and Angel Joy Asilo from the University of Batangas, and Evangeline Joy Rivera from the University of Laguna.

Meanwhile, Patriot Rafael Dionisio handled the chess tourney with both grit and logic along with Caviteno woodpushers Jesiah Mendoza, Kevin Villa, and Gilson Manaig.

 

 

Taekwondo

Putting their best feet forward, The CALABARZON Jins won a total of two gold and five bronze medals in the Men and Women’s divisions of the tournament. Victoriously battling against Region VII, Patriot Jin Jhalyne Mae Juanillo took home a bronze medal in the flyweight division, while Patriot Jin Sajawal Waheed bagged another bronze medal for the bantamweight division match against Region XII.

Patriot Waheed, who had now competed thrice in the Nationals bout, has gone full circle in his Taekwondo journey as he concluded his playing years. Sharing his motivation to seal a place in the meet, he stated that his “lack in play style” last quarter finals match in the PRISAA – Nationals 2018 fuelled his drive to train harder this year.

“Masaya ako sa nakuha ko. Natalo ako last year dahil nabasag ng kalaban ko ‘yong laro ko pero ngayon, natalo ako dahil nagkulang ako sa endurance department. Nevertheless, natalo ako ng kalaban ko sa malinis na paraan. Hindi na rin masama dahil at least nag-medal ako sa last playing year [ko],” Waheed said.

 

 

Table Tennis

Paddling their way up the ladder during the tourney, the CALABARZON paddlers put up a good fight as they captured medals for the week-long PRISAA – Nationals.

Facing heavy losses during their first games in the Men’s division of Singles A, Singles B, and Doubles events, the Region IV-A table tennis representatives bounced back and regained composure as Patriot Antonio Emmanuel Tan consecutively won in the Singles A event, stating “unang sinabi sakin ng nag-coach sakin (Coach Arsenio De Guzman) bago ako lumaban, ‘malakas [ang] kalaban natin so ang kailangan mong gawin ay magwala ka. Gusto ko maging wild ka sa game mo pero at the same time, controlled pa rin tayo.’”

Meanwhile, CALABARZON paddlers Reyniel Turtur and Gyver Ocampo dominated the board during the Men’s Doubles event. In the same division, Singles B event player Carlito Reyes also put up a strong fight as he prevailed during his second match-up.
