Dare to Move 8 ‘elevates’ despite fewer organizers this 2016

Fourth year BS in Hotel and Restaurant Management students organized an annual dance competition entitled “Dare to Move VIII: Elevate” to showcase the talents of the students from different universities and colleges held at Le Pavillon Metropolitan Park, Pasay City, November 11.

With the theme “Elevate,” Dare to Move 8 opened its dance competition to both high school and college students on November 11 at Le Pavilion, Pasay City, despite having a low number of organizers from the fourth year BS in Hotel Restaurant Management (HRM) students.

“Sa lahat ng [batches] na nag-Dare to Move, more or less nasa hundred and above [‘yong organizers]. In each committee, more or less ‘di sila (previous batches) bumababa sa five members, kami naman (HRM batch 2016), opposite [dahil] pinakamrami na namin ang five [per committee],” Events Manager Alphard Bernardo explained.

Having a total of only 45 members, Bernardo mentioned that organizing the two categories for 2016’s Dare to Move served as a challenge for them financially, physically, and mentally.

“Dapat P6,000 lang talaga [ang contribution namin] but since 45 members lang kami, nag-raise kami ng P2,000 each. P8,000 contribution [each], then P8,000 from [each of] the sponsors,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bernardo mentioned that the two main reasons for having the least number of organizers this year are the academic calendar shift and the On the Job Training (OJT) in the United States of the majority of the fourth year HRM students.

“Hindi dapat Dare to Move ang ico-conduct na event this semester, dapat ‘yong NYHRPC (National Young Hoteliers and Restaurateurs Power Conference). But dahil kaunti nga lang kami, ginawa na lang for first semester itong Dare to Move,” Bernardo said.

The Dare to Move interschool hip-hop battle is an annual requirement for the DLSU-D’s fourth year HRM students’ Events Management class, originally conducted every second semester.

 

The eight installment of Dare to Move showcased performances from popular dance crews and a dance showdown for the 16 participating schools hailing from Cavite and Metro Manila.

Two categories

According to Bernardo, this year’s theme also represents how the participants’ talents and skills are showcased in the said dance competition.

“From the Latin word elevatus, which means ‘to raise or lift up,’ we (HRM students) decided to elevate from the first to seventh season of Dare to Move, so we added the college category for the eighth season this year kahit kaunti lang kami,” Bernardo said.

There were 16 schools which competed for Dare to Move 8 that involves nine and seven participating schools  from the high school and college categories, respectively.

“Sa high school participants, all of them are from Cavite area only. For the college participants, mayroong from Manila, Cavite, Tagaytay, so mixed sila,” Bernardo said.

He furthered that they were advised not to include any Lasallian schools for the competition in the two categories to avoid possible conflicts and to give chance to non-Lasallian institutions.

The Imus Institute of Science and Technology and the City College of Tagaytay won in the high school and college category, respectively, each winning a trophy and P20,000.
