DLSU-D hosts first Midyear Career and Internship Fair
The Alumni Relations and Placement Office (ARPO) held the first Midyear Career and Internship Fair at the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management courtyard on October 29 to accommodate college students who will be graduating this November and students who will be enrolling in practicum courses for the second semester of academic year (AY) 2015-2016.
According to ARPO Coordinator Leo Manansala, at least 500 students are expected to graduate this November while another 500 students will take their On the Job Trainings (OJTs) next semester.
“In coordination with the practicum supervisors, we found out that there are a considerable number of students looking for OJT so we decided to combine the job fair for the graduating students and students looking for OJT,” he said.
He added that the event will give the midyear graduating students the same employment opportunities as the regular graduating students since the job fair was conducted at the end of the first semester instead of the end of every AY.
The Midyear Career and Internship Fair aims to provide a convenient location where DLSU-D students can meet potential employers and perform job interviews without going to the actual company, he said.
Each company provided a booth where students can inquire about job openings, application, and hiring processes.
He furthered that they invited a total of 21 companies from the manufacturing, health, education, and Business Process Outsourcing industries to give various career options for the students.
Since many participants are needed to establish partnerships with these companies, ARPO required the students who are graduating this November and students who will take their OJTs next semester to attend the said event as part of their clearance.
Manansala added, “we usually create alternative activities para sa mga estudyante na hindi naka-attend [ng job fair]. They just need to provide us with a valid reason kung bakit hindi sila naka-attend.”
Manansala said they plan to conduct the Midyear Career and Internship Fair for the succeeding AYs.
Job opportunities arise
The event was also sponsored by the Student Wellness Center and DLSU-D Colleges in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), JOBS180, and Public Employment Service Office.
It started at 10 AM and more than 800 students participated in the said event.
Different companies like Monde Nissin, Tom’s World, United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB), SM Supermalls, STARTEK Philippines, Tata Consultancy Services, and Sykes Excel have offered different career options for the students during the event.
