DLSU-D students host 4th Model United Nations
Delegates discuss concerns of their represented countries like the armed conflict in the Middle East in the 4th Dasmariñas Model United Nations (MUN).
As part of the curriculum for the International Relations subject, fourth year Political Science and second year Development Studies students organized the 4th Dasmariñas Model United Nations (MUN) at the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute on April 11 and 12.
According to Social Science professor Edwin Lineses, MUN is a simulation of the actual proceedings in the United Nations (UN) meetings wherein students act as ambassador of the countries they represent and provide solutions to global issues.
“The idea is they (students) should know the history, the politics, the economics, and the countries they are representing because they will try to convince other [acting] states to somehow side with them in their positions,” Lineses said.
With this year’s theme “The Role of the International Community in the Preservation and Promotion of Human Rights, Peace, and Security,” the students discussed issues on the armed conflict in the Middle East and the situation of Syrian refugees.
Although the MUN serves only as an academic exercise, Lineses said they could submit the recommendations proposed by the students to the UN.
Around 140 DLSU-D students attended the event as acting representatives of various countries. Lineses said they invited other schools to participate in the said event, but only few delegates from Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite attended, since most of the classes are over.
The United Nations is an international organization composed of 193 countries and is considered as the largest and most influential governmental organization.
