Dolloso succumbs to recurring ankle injury in Taipei Summer Universaide
Succumbing to a worsened ankle injury, Patriot Felyn Dolloso landed 11th out of 13 in the qualification round of women’s long jump group A after her first jump attempt marked a low 5.46-meter long flight, as compared to her 6.02-meter personal best in the first day of the 29th Summer Universiade athletics tourney held at the Taipei stadium, Taipei City, Taiwan from August 23 to 28.
Team Philippines also withdrew from the 4 x 100-meter relay women’s division event due to Dolloso and her teammate, De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde’s Areis dela Peña’s injury.
“No’ng last run-through ko before mag-start ang game, ‘pag take-off ko, ‘di ko namalayan sobrang napalakas [‘yongtalon ko] kasi sa taas na ng adrenaline. But every time I’m doing my training even sa warm up, lagi ko pinakikiramdaman, OK naman na siya (ankle) but suddenly ‘di pa pala talaga fully-recovered [‘yong injury],” Dolloso said.
Cause and effect
Even before this year’s Universiade, the lone-Patriot delegate was injured back when she was training for the 2017 Private Schools Athletic Association – Nationals. She then experienced the injury again last June in her guest athletic performance at the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) held in Pasig City.
“[‘Yong injury ko] before National PRISAA [pa], kaya rin ‘di maganda performance ko doon. But I still competed ‘cause that’s one of my responsibilities … last June, bumalik ito no’ng nag-performance ako sa [PATAFA] mas masakit siya. Mas malala siya kasi nagbu-bukol at grabe talaga pamamaga, halos ‘di na ako makalakad¸” the trackster expressed.
During the third day of Universiade, the injury affected Dolloso’s performance in the women’s triple jump group B qualification round where she placed last—committing faults in the first two attempts but landing the third attempt with a 12.25-meter distance, which is low compared to her 12.69-meter personal best.
Keeping her hopes high for the upcoming competitions despite the injury, Dolloso shared that “Para sa akin walang maaapektuhan. Itutuloy kolang din ang training and therapy, ‘di rin naman kasi mawawala kahit ipahinga ko, kailangan ko lang palakasin pa lalo para maging immune na siya sa susunod.”
