Hospitality EDGE Student Summit PH introduces latest foodservice, lodging industry trends

The Convention and Events Management Class 2017 of BS in Hotel and Restaurant Management students spearheaded the Hospitality EDGE Student Summit, with the theme Innovation, Opportunities, and Sustainability (I.O.S) in the Philippines’ Hospitality Industry, wherein notable guest speakers Michael Angelo, Julius Caesar Falzado, Jet Cornejo, Jason Lo and Rommel Gerodias discussed globalization, innovation, technology, and attitude in the workplace on November 29 at the One Esplanade Event Venue, Mall of Asia.

 

Motivational talk

Angelo, a TV personality and inspirational speaker, gave a motivational talk by sharing a “Thanksgiving, Inspiration, and Perseverance” (T.I.P) for success, wherein he told the student attendees that “your focus must be on studies… our society cannot afford to have mediocre people.”

He also advised the students that in times of difficulties, one should simply go past the problem instead of idling around it. Moreover, according to him, failure from time to time helps in the learning process since learning does not come from success alone.

“You learn from your mistakes, you don’t learn from your success,” Angelo asserted.

In relation to failure, Lo, a speaker, entrepreneur and author of the book YOUnique “Understanding Others by Understanding YOU” and YOUnique Youth, shared the triple A’s, which stand for Aware, Accept and Adapt as a source of inspiration.

He added, “Don’t be afraid to fail because anything is possible.”

 

Addressing opportunities

Cornejo, managing partner in brand activation agency Team Excite, talked about translating brand strategy to consumer engagement.

According to Cornejo, “With consumer attention becoming harder than ever to come by, meaningful experiences across relevant touch points remain to be every brand’s best tool in engaging the audience and ensuring favorable results.”

Meanwhile, Falzado, volunteer and advocate of the Kaya Natin! Movement, attended the summit in behalf of Vice President Leni Robredo.

Focusing on employment, he talked about the current employment status in the Philippines, mentioning DLSU-D as one of the competitive schools that gives its students an edge in “imparting change” into the world.

Moreover, Gerodias, Chair in the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council, talked about cultivating the entrepreneurial mindset of future industry leaders and the changing world of work.

Gerodias elaborated the importance of globalization, innovation, and technology in adapting to change in the workplace.

 

“The world is changing and so we should [change as well]. Kung may gagawin kayo, galingan niyo na,” he said.

Students and faculty members in the field of Hotel and Restaurant Management, Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management from Mariners’ Polytechnic Colleges Naga Campus, Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College–Sta. Maria Campus, and De La Salle University–Dasmariñas, together with professionals from different industry-related establishments were present during the event.
