#ProfFiles: Lasallians share their favorite professor story

We all have stories of the dear terror professors who’ve made the ride through college memorable, for better or for worse—but as World Teacher’s Day comes to a close, let’s remember that besides stress, our professors can also become our number one source of inspiration.

 

In celebration of National Teacher’s Day and Teacher’s Month, the College of Liberal Arts and Communication Student Council put up the “Freedom Wall Alay sa Aking Guro” located at the Julian Felipe Hall.

 

Kenneth Ortega (CPE42)

May mga prof na masungit nang sobra, may mga prof na mahilig sa roleta, may marami pang iba, ngunit wala d’yan ‘yong tamang salita para ma-describe [siya]. [Siya] kasi ‘yong astig na prof na mapa-kung saang room man tayo, kahit naka-ilang lipat na ‘di pa rin mapapantayan ‘yong klase na nauuwi sa kwentuhan. Sobrang solid na REED143 days, ang saya ng kwentuhan. Kaya ang masasabi ko lang sa mga blockmates ko na lumipat malas niyo wala kayong Sir Pio Viado! Sobrang salamat, Sir! Legit, kita-kita tayo sa Retreat, Sir!

We’re in the middle of research-making in our English class and you might think it’s an easy task for COM students, but getting your topic turned down and rejected several times proves that it’s not. However, having a professor like Sir Venn made research a whole lot easier. He’s not the type of professor who turns down a topic and tells you to revise on your own, nor is he the type to rudely criticize your work. He helps throughout the process. So, to our dearest English professor Sir Venn, thank you for your willingness to help us out. Your quirky and genuine personality made research a whole lot bearable.

 

Maricar Mari (MKA46)

May prof ako sa Filipino noong first year college yung class is 1-2:30PM sobrang nakakaantok and nakakatamad yung oras pero pag class nya eh masaya lahat kaming magkakaklase kasi sobrang galing mag turo at makikinig ka talaga. Tapos mahilig mag-joke. Sobrang exciting at enjoy niya mag pa-quiz kasi ano `yon by group tapos kailangan n`yo pa lumabas ng room tapos mag-search ng sagot sa buong La Salle. Tapos may prize ‘yong mananalo. Paunahan kasi ‘yon. Nalimutan ko na ‘yong prize pero may ibibigay siya. Tapos sobrang cool niya kaya gustong-gusto ko pumapasok sa klase nya.

 

Patricia Jade Gonzalez (COM33)

My favorite professor is Ma’am Salvan from the CJD, and she also happens to be my thesis adviser. She’s a really cool professor, and I can talk to her about anything. I enjoy our time during thesis consultation because she doesn’t make it feel too serious. At times, we would also exchange stories about our life experiences.

 

“Kate” (MKA41)

‘Yong pinaka-favorite kong Fil teacher, ‘yong noong third year ako. Sobrang strict as in— hindi sya nage-entertain ng excuse, kung ano gusto n’ya, gusto niya… kaya `wag ka petiks sa class n`ya kasi `pag may isa ka lang na-miss, lagot ka sa recitation—ipapahiya ka n`ya ng bongga hangga`t sa mahihiya ka na talaga. Ang lakas pa mang-trip noon, nakikisali sa mga asaran sa room. Pero na-realize ko na sa paraan ni Ma’am sa amin….nire-ready n`ya lang kami for the reality of life… na ganoon daw talaga, hindi sa lahat ng pagkakataon, pagbibigyan ka. You need to abide on certain rules na sinet niya and there were rules na kapag sinet na, hindi na pwede baguhin.

 

Rie Yen (BEE31)

[Si] Dr. Manuel Camarse. Palagi n`yang sinasabi sa ‘min na hindi niya akalaing makakapagturo siya sa mga pre-schoolers kasi hindi niya ma-imagine ang sarili niya na nagtuturo sa maliliit na bata. Noong unang beses na nagturo siya sa Preschool, kahit na hindi niya alam kung ano ‘yong dapat na gawin, napamahal na agad siya sa pagtuturo at sa mga estudyante niya. And also, napamahal na din ‘yong mga estudyante niya sa kanya kasi na-feel nila ‘yong presence ng isang teacher na kaya silang samahan na parang isang kaibigan, ganoon.

And kahit na i-discriminate o pag-usapan siya ng mga co-teachers niya dahil sa mga teaching techniques niya eh okay lang. Pinapabayaan niya kasi nakikita niya na nade-develop doon ‘yong mga bata.

Inspiring s`ya kasi parang ‘yong akala mo na hindi mo kaya, makakayanan mo pala. Tapos, isa pa, ipinaglalaban niya ‘yong mga bagay-bagay na para sa kapakanan ng mga bata. A very good example ng isang magaling na teacher!

 

Kris Aira Galang (PSY32)

Si Mam de Ala (Psychology professor). Kasi before, [‘yung] description sa kanya [ay] sobrang strict tapos [noong] naging prof ko [siya], ang dali niyang mahalin. Sobrang galing [niya] kasi magturo. Parang hinihila niya attention mo, plus sinabihan niya ako ng ‘good job’ noong prelim week eh sobrang stressed ako noon so ayon.

 

Myca Saboco (BSA41)

Si Sir Edwin Lineses ‘yong favorite professor ko (siguro ‘di lang ngayong college, buong student life na). Siya ‘yong masasabi kong good example ng isang guro: karespe-respeto, fair sa pagbibigay ng grades, sobrang matututo ka kasi nagtuturo talaga, and on top of that, may humor kaya kahit Sociology at Philippine Constitution [ang] tinuturo niya, attentive lahat ng students sa kanya.

 

Eunice Bautista (BSM41)

My favorite professor is Mr. Charles C. Onda, CPA, M.D. Sir Onda’s an inspiring professor to learn from especially from his journey in taking up med school after becoming a CPA. He’s a good-natured person and never ceases to let the students understand his lessons in Income and Business Tax. The best moments were whenever students happened to be early in class, he’d give them an early bird promo because of being punctual. Also, he occasionally drops some medical jargon in class and encourages students to take up their pursuits with hard work no matter what the circumstances are.

 

Jasper Que (BSA41)

Si Ma’am Eden Cabrera. Lagi niyang inuuna ang iba bago ang sarili niya. Sobrang understanding niya at humble. Pinaka-favorite ko sa kanya ay ‘yong words of encouragement niya sa room na sobrang tagos sa puso.

 

Kintine Lacasandile (ENR31)

Pinaka-remarkable teacher talaga sa`kin si Sir Jigs Medina. [Naging] teacher ko siya sa Kursong Rizal. Well, pangit ang first impression nya sa`kin because first meeting namin, he was feeling sick. First time kong napagalitan at sobrang sama ng loob ko. Kada makikita namin siya outside ng room, or habang naglalakad, sumisikip talaga dibdib ko sa takot. I gave him a sorry letter after tapos nag-aral akong mabuti. Dahil doon naging masipag ako, lagi niya akong tinatawag sa recitation [kaya] na-challenge ako. At the end ng sem, naka-4.00 naman ako at naging close kami.

 

Stephanie Roslinda (COM32)

I remember, one time noong nagpapirma ako ng form sa org adviser namin na si Ma’am Peth Amoncio (who happened to be my Filipino professor in first year), bigla niyang sinabi sa ‘kin na natutuwa siyang makita ako na isa nang active student leader. Hindi kasi ako active sa klase niya kasi I’m quite introverted. Also, I don’t like speaking in front of people. Nang marinig ko ‘yong sinabi niya sa ‘kin, she really made me happy and inspired. I was encouraged to create and do more out of my comfort zone. Pinaramdam niya sa ‘kin na may nakakapansin at nakaka-appreciate sa mga ginagawa ko.
