Safety first: Precautions for the citizens of Cavite

With the recent alarming shootings happening around Cavite, it’s best to know how to keep safe and avoid causing panic—both online and offline.

  • •  Be wary of statements posted on social media. These alleged shooting reports may come from word of mouth or moments of panic, rather than rational fact-checking.
  • •  Don’t spread panic by giving in to fake news. Think critically when sharing pictures or videos with sensitive content. One instance was earlier today when a robbery incident was mistaken for a riding-in-tandem shooting.
  • •  Either on social media or in person, refrain from making jokes. Remember this is a sensitive and ongoing community threat, so motorcycle jokes are hardly a laughing matter.
  • •  Keep your wits about you when walking outside. Keep your eyes off your phone and on your surroundings—also, walk on the sidewalk, not on the road.
  • •  Be wary of motorcycles that don’t follow the Sangguniang Panglungsod’s Resolution No. 153-s-2017 prohibiting the concealment drivers’ and passengers’ faces and going past the 40 km/hour speed limit.
  • •  Notify your family or friends if you arrived home safely. A simple “I’m okay/home” text goes a long way these days.
  • •  Choose the safest route when going home, even if it costs a little more than the usual. Your safety matters more than your money.
  • •  Avoid dark sidewalks where there’s little to no people.
  • •  As per DLSU-D’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management – Safety and Security Manual (available in the portal) on firearms and deadly weapons:
    • •  Individuals seen with firearms and other deadly weapons shall be notified not to enter the University or leave the University.
    • •  Initiate evacuation and notify everybody to stay out of the area.
    • •  Wait for the proper authorities to arrive.
