Senatorial candidates Diokno, Tañada and de Guzman attend senatorial forum in DLSU-D
In anticipation of the Philippine Midterm election this May 19, senatorial candidates Atty. Jose Manuel “Chel” Icasiano Diokno, Atty. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III and Ka Leody de Guzman took part in a senatorial forum attended by the five University sectors—students, faculty, support staff, alumni, and parents yesterday, April 25, at the Ugnayang La Salle.
Each representative from the five sectors were permitted to ask the candidates their stand from light to moderate issues, among the issues discussed during the first round were the Expansion of the Workmen’s Compensation in relation with the strengthening of the Mental Health Law for the benefit of the workers productivity, Territorial Integrity and Sovereignty of the Philippines against China, and the waiver of sovereign immunity of the Philippines when the administration accepted loans from China to fund the Kaliwa Dam project.
Moreover, the forum tackled the approval of the National Land Use Bill as the land syndicators take advantage through commercializing some of the undigitized records of land classification meant for agriculture, lowering the age of criminal responsibility, and the nationalization of the urban rail system wherein it seeks to remove the private sector in providing this services and appoint the government as the sole supplier.
During the second round of the forum, students raised questions on the end of contractualization by strengthening the security of tenure legislation; and the revision of Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991 as a means to give equal resources to the local governments as opposed to the shift of Federalism. Meanwhile, the faculty and the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) sector asked the senatorial candidates on the proper implementation of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law and the equal rights of women as part of the building blocks of the nation.
The senatorial forum was organized through the partnership of DLSU-D, DLSMHSI and De La Salle Philippines.
