24th UNIGAMES: DLSU-D ranks 4th in Women’s Basketball, fails to secure spots in Athletics division

During the last games of the 24th Philippines University Games (UNIGAMES), Patriot tracksters failed to secure a rank out of the seven Athletics events, while the cagebelles lost the battle for third.

Cagebelles’ journey

The attempt to capture third place slipped away from DLSU-D women’s basketball team after tasting another defeat, succumbing to University of Mindanao (UM), with quarter scores of 10-6, 22-16, 33-34, 45-46.

Previously slammed by the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) with a 43-63 loss in the semifinal round, leading them to the battle for third place against UM, the Patriot cagebelles fell off on the 4th place for the Basketball Women’s Division of the tournament. With only eight seconds left on the clock, Patriot seniors Dianne Reyes and Mariel Campasa led the team and took over the UM Wildcats defense strategy, cutting the advantage of the opponents by one as Miles Magaro successfully scored a free throw, 45-46.

Suffering from an injury, Patriot cagebelle Reyes struggled to help the team and showed up during the late third canto, “Major factor dinyon kasi siya yong nagsta-start [ng laro],” DLSU-D Basketball Women’s Team Head Coach Tito Reyes shared.

DLSU-D worked their way up the league, supplying a 5-0 win-loss record in the elimination round, overthrowing University of St. La Salle (USLS), USA, UM, University of Northern Philippines (UNP), and Rizal Technological University (RTU).

UM was previously dominated by the Patriot cagebelles on the third day of UNIGAMES, leaving them behind with a 4-point advantage, 56-52, in the elimination round clinching a 5-0 lead in the first bracket in the tournament.

Leading with unbeatable record in the eliminations, DLSU-D also whipped University of St. La Salle (USLS) on the first day of the tournament, collecting a 66-point advantage with quarter scores 26-3, 52-7, 73-20, 90-24.

The Patriots stretched their elims domination, surpassing their opponents to secure their post after overpowering USA, finishing with 25-point advantage, 14-13, 41-28, 61-44, 80-55.

Patriot rookies Angelika Armillo and Magaro’s performance secured the ticket in the last two games of DLSU-D against UNP, 16-7, 40-20, 58-30, 68-34, and RTU, 20-7, 47-23, 70-36, 81-47

Patriots Reyes and Campasa, shared that their vision for the team is merely focused on the improvement of the rookies. “Binibigay nilayong best nila every game. Maasahan sila,” Campasa said.

Trackster’s campaign

On the contrary, DLSU-D Tracksters’ campaign to top in the league’s Athletics Division was unsuccessful as DLSU-D failed to rank and make a mark in any of the seven events.

University of Santo Tomas topped the Women’s 100-meter event, the 3000-meter event, and the 4×200-meter relay event, while University of the Philippines Diliman placed first in the Men’s 100-meter event, 400-meter event, and the 3000-meter event.

On the other hand, University of the East’s Vincent Dela Cruz secured first place in the Men’s 5-kilometer walkathon event.
