DLSU-D cagers trounce STI, notch second straight win
Maintaining their winning streak, the DLSU-D cagers thrashed the Systems Technology Institute (STI) – Laguna in a compelling 65-42 triumph during the 10th season of the United CALABARZON Collegiate League men’s basketball at the FAITH Gymnasium, Tanauan, Batangas yesterday, July 31.
Kicking off the first canto, both teams displayed a sturdy defense against each other until 5:18 when Patriot cager Janari Reyes broke the ice after producing two accurate charity shots, 2-0.
A minute after scoring from the line, the Patriots slowly found their rhythm with Christian Loyola, Karl Jacob Khan, and Justine Amponin’s hotshot shooting that wrapped up the first quadrant with a nine-point advantage, 16-7.
Despite the Laguna team’s effort to chase off their deficit in the second period, Patriots maintained their composure with Amponin as he continued to hit the mark for the team, 28-20.
Dominant finale
Launching the third quadrant with combined effort, Patriots Loyola, Egie Boy Mojica, and John Cantimbuhan joined forces to contribute six points from three consecutive layups, 34-22. Spearheading the DLSU-D cagers, Cantimbuhan dropped eight of the team’s 12 points in the period.
The green-and-white side remained superior by the quarter, ending with a nine-point lead advantage despite the blue-and-yellow’s 15-12 run, 44-35.
After gaining morale during the third period, the green-and-white squad’s steady offense and defense limited STI’s tally with only seven points on the endgame, 56-42. Meanwhile, Patriots Cantimbuhan and Pacholo Loor continued releasing easy layups and two three-pointers, respectively, which marked their opponent’s meltdown, 65-42.
Looking to extend their winning ways, DLSU-D will go up against Philippine Christian University-Dasmariñas on August 11 at the same venue.
